I’ve been starving for Montecristi hats with brims a full four inches wide. They had all but disappeared. The weavers just didn’t make them any more. Disaster. Many of you cannot imagine living in a world without wide brim Montecristi hats. And you did not hesitate to tell me about it.
So I told Jorge about it. Jorge is my buyer. Jorge quickly discovered I was right: the weavers simply refused to weave wide brim hats, even for extra pay. So Jorge reinvented wide brim hats. He created an entirely new way to have them woven. Jorge is a very smart man.
It took more than a year to get everything working well, but Jorge has succeeded and beautiful wide brim hats have finally arrived. More good news: many of them are extra large sizes, also very difficult to get.

New masterpieces from Simón and Marcial
Simón Espinal is the best weaver in the world. Marcial is the second best, and gaining fast. Their hats are so finely woven that each weaver produces only three or four hats each year. These are the hats that kings covet. These are the very finest Montecristi hats in the world. All Simón and Marcial hats have regular width brims, usually three inches or less.
I have just received two Marcial hats and one Simón hat. One of the Marcial hats is the finest hat he has ever woven. It is more finely woven than some of the Simón hats in my collection.

The greatest hat ever woven.
Simón is now weaving the greatest hat of his life. And he has already woven some hats that defy belief, even when I am looking at them and holding them in my hands.
In the photo to the right, Simón is holding the beginning of the plantilla, the top of the crown. It is about the size of a dime. He had been weaving for two days, about fifteen hours, to get it to that size.
Can you see how fine that is? Of course not. That’s the point. This might be the finest Montecristi hat ever woven. Ever.
Simón began the hat at the end of May 2008, at the beginning of the dry season, the best time for weaving. He will invest at least five months in weaving this hat.
See the two white strands in the photo to the left? One of them is a straw that Simón will use in the hat. The other is dental floss. The dental floss is the fat one. Right. Mind boggling. Imagine weaving dental floss for five months. The background is a T-shirt.
I shot about 3100 photos to document the “birth” of this hat. Jorge is photographing the progress weekly. Jorge tells me he laughs every week to see how little Simón has added since the previous visit. Simón does not join him in the laughter.
