Marcie – a globe-trotting descendant of Marco Polo, by her own telling – came to me for the perfect travel hat. The Optimo did not suit her, so I designed this: a classic Montecristi you can roll up, the crease and dome smoothed away, finished with a simple black ribbon and nothing frilly. Her brief was equal parts elegant and rugged – dressy enough for a Prime Minister’s garden party, tough enough for a camel crossing of the Sahara. For the rest of us, it is just as happy among Maya ruins, in a crowded souk, or beside the pool. It goes where you go.
